Search engine optimization (SEO) is sometimes like the forgotten older brother or sister of the Internet Age.

With the emergence of Internet marketing in the early 1990s, SEO came onto the scene and helped proactive marketers increase the visibility of web sites.

Given the focus on paid search, social media, marketing automation and more, it’s easy to forget about the power of SEO. As SEO ages – and yields attention to a new set of siblings – it stands ready to help when called back to the homefront.

SEO has held up despite the push toward local search results and personalized search that can dramatically affect some results from person to person and city to city.

Here are 5 tips to keep in mind to get the most out of search engine optimization:

1. Use keywords in your domain name.
If you’re building a new web site, your domain will help you in the long run if you work in at least one keyword. Rumors abound that this strategy isn’t effective. Believe me, search engines haven’t stopped factoring in keywords within a domain. If you have an existing web site, you can even get an established domain – with keywords in it – and redirect it toward yours (a few redirects are fine).

2. Select relevant keyword phrases.
Don’t reach for the stars and grab whatever comes to mind. Think specificity. You’re better off targeting “cordless hammer drill” rather than “power tools.”

3. Test.
Search engine optimization is not a one-time exercise – never has been and never will be. Test out different keyword scenarios on the same page. See what works best.

4. Use page titles for keywords.
Page titles that appear by meta data are still an ideal place to plant keyword phrases. With content management systems, it’s common for the page header (like a headline) to populate the page title. Your web site can rank on search engines that way, but you can rank for more keywords by providing some variety in the page titles.

5. Yes, content is king.
Don’t worry about keyword to text ratios. Just write content – good content. If your pages are thin – maybe 100 words – you won’t do so well. Break long text into multiple pages and include an info box with links to other pages. Even with one page, you should be diligent and cross-link keywords (linking them from one page to similar pages on your web site).
*Bonus: Write each meta description with a catchy call to action. Sure, search engines don’t really factor these words in the rankings, but the descriptions can appear with search engine results. Use the text to convince a busy Internet searcher to click the link to your great web site.

Any rumors of an upcoming device from Apple are always going to be hot property, and speculation of a cheap iPhone in 2013 refuses to let up. Despite Apple’s Phil Schiller insisting budget smartphones “will never be the future of Apple’s products,” rumors have intensified this week with the guys over at iLounge releasing images from “reliable sources” of a plastic iPhone 5 aimed at the Chinese market.

Of course, of all the information put out by iLounge, this is purely speculation, but the article on the site does go into depth with several images and some alleged design specs. According to the report, the new device will sport the front of the iPhone 5, the bottom of the fifth generation iPod Touch, and an overall shape that resembles the iPod Classic – the music player that was released back in 2008.

The budget iPhone is said to be slightly larger than the iPhone 5 (by about half a millimeter), but will feature the same 4-inch screen and will surprisingly sport the Retina Display, with the 1,136 x 640 display covered in Corning’s Gorilla Glass, although, in a difference to the iPhone 5 the glass will be raised slightly.

The plastic phone is said to be curvier in its shape in comparison to the newer generation iPhones, curving from the front of the phone into the back, much like the iPod Classic. The circular iPhone 5 volume and sound switch buttons will revert to a pear shape and the butt will feature the new lightning port, a headphone port and a speaker in a similar design to the fifth gen iPod Touch.

Rumors are always something to get excited about, but I’ve seen plenty of stuff from “reliable sources” in the past that turned out to be anything but reliable. However, while it is hard not to be skeptical, the iLounge report is certainly worth checking out.

President of India Pranab Mukherjee and Tripura State Governor Dr. D. Y. Patil were recently introduced to a new globally patented diabetes device called the 1Clik, a groundbreaking diabetes device comprised of a glucose monitor, insulin pen and wireless communications system all in one.

“There is a real need for such innovative medical devices to be made available to the Indian population at affordable prices”, said President Mukherjee.

Medical experts say India has one of the largest populations in diabetes and incident rates in the world, which is why the 1Clik diabetes management system was so fascinating to The President and diabetes experts worldwide.

Inventor Rana Arefieg of Global Innovations says she came up with the idea for this device after seeing her own mother lose consciousness from an insulin overdose.

“It was so terrifying to see! Luckily we have doctors in the family who were able to save her, but what about the people who aren’t as fortunate? I just had to do something about it.”, says Arefieg.

The 1Clik is diabetes management simplified, especially for children and seniors who sometimes lose track of taking insulin, blood sugar testing and communicating the results to their parents or caregivers. The device notifies emergency officials in case a patient needs assistance or is unresponsive to coaching instructions, and minimizes risk of complications due to hypoglycemia. The 1Clik can even alert an emergency provider when needed.

“It’s like Siri technology for people suffering with diabetes. It walks you through the entire management process verbally”, says Arefieg.

Here’s how it works. The 1Clik, which resembles an insulin pen, has two functional sides. One side has a hidden test strip which tests your blood sugar when applied to the skin. The 1Clik will give both a verbal and LCD blood sugar reading.

The device will then say if you need insulin and how much will be distributed. Simply flip the pen over to the hidden injector side and wait for the verbal five- second countdown. Successful injection.

The 1Clik time stamps every injection, and all information is transported via i-cloud technology for doctors and caregivers to keep track.

George Bickerstaff, President of Global Innovations says this amazing innovation will change the face of diabetes management forever. “It will save lives and slash the overall cost of diabetes on society which is an estimated $100 billion per year!”, says Bickerstaff.

Previously, people suffering with diabetes needed to purchase a blood glucose monitor, test strips at roughly $1.00 per strip, insulin, syringes and alcohol swabs. The 1Clik includes all of these items in one device, and has a reduced risk of communications loopholes between doctors and patients.

It’s been a long wait folks, but it has finally happened – T-Mobile USA has signed a deal with Apple!

The Deutsche Telecom owned company revealed the news that some people thought never possible with a statement online, saying “T-Mobile USA has entered into an agreement with Apple to bring products to market together in 2013.” The statement stopped short of mentioning a particular Apple device by name, but it was revealed later in an updated article by the LA Times that the device would indeed be the iPhone.

“John Legere, chief executive of T-Mobile USA, has confirmed the network will carry the iPhone. Talking about upcoming smartphones T-Mobile will carry, he held up an iPhone, saying the list included the Apple device,” reported the Times. One would assume that that would mean T-Mobile USA stocking the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 4, although the iPad is not likely. Sales of tablets from mobile carriers in general are not all that strong, so iPad deals may not prove lucrative.

As we all know, T-Mobile USA is the only one of the four major US carriers not to offer the iPhone and they have never been shy in telling the world how much they would love to offer the popular device. Just last month at the Morgan Stanley 12th Annual Technology, Media and Telecoms Conference in Barcelona, T-Mobile USA CCO Jim Alling said: “Make no mistake about it: We would love to carry the iPhone. However, we want the economies to be right for us.” Obviously the economy issues have been addressed.

T-Mobile’s attempts to cater to iPhone users has even seen them go to the lengths of advertising Apple’s phones in stores, showing iPhone owners how good their data service is compared to other carriers that actually stock the iPhone, and hoping that it is enough to tempt people into unlocking their devices.

With the MetroPCS merger and T-Mobile USA’s plans to develop their own LTE network, the timing of this Apple deal has worked out very well and could see the company prosper in 2013 and close the gap on Verizon and AT&T.
